Soweto comes too easyTo the carnival streets of Athlone.
The highveld firesThat scorched our consciousness
Of blood-dripping bodies.
The charred contractured cadaversWill burn again tonight:
Bonfire to ashes,
Lost in the songs of the South-Easter.
For onceThe voluble Cape
Will be hushed
