FROM SOWETO TO ATHLONE
© Farouk Asvat
Soweto comes too easy
To the carnival streets of Athlone.
The highveld fires
That scorched our consciousness
Are frozen
In stockpiles
Of blood-dripping bodies.
The charred contractured cadavers
Will burn again tonight:
Bonfire to ashes,
Lost in the songs of the South-Easter.
For once
The voluble Cape
Will be hushed
