THE PILGRIM

THE PILGRIM
© Farouk Asvat

Exile is a pilgrimage away.
And life
Whoring with death
Is a moment away

     Towers
     Syrup-coated in sunset
     Scintillate invitations
     To the neon night
     As chocolate leaves
     Dance in the august wind
     In the mecca of towers

Where the prodigal pilgrim of the land
Has found the destitute temple of his dreams
     The sanctuary of his nightmares

¨ A CELEBRATION OF FLAMES by FAROUK ASVAT
§ WINNER OF THE VITA AWARD

""A Celebration of Flames" is a powerful, impassioned call. The sanity and courage of this collection arises from the poet's unique experiential perceptions of his milieu, making him one of the few who can write about these traumatic times with such lucidity and lyricism. The strength of Farouk Asvat's poetry lies in the way he intertwines the complex elements of social and political conflicts with intense personal relationships. The wide tonal range extends from sensual and delicate insights into the nature of passion to the satiric and humorous use of slang."
Vita Award citation

"Like hesitating snowflakes his words are fascinating in their capricious wilfulness - like unexpected strokes of a whip."
Susanne Baackmann, University Of Albuquerque, USA

"His love poetry soars with an intense sensitivity, it celebrates lyrically the joys of a most exquisite sensuousness."
● Marcia Leveson, University Of The Witwatersrand, The Indicator

""A Celebration of Flames" (is) a powerful, impassioned call.  I admire the sanity and courage of this.  Your position and perception make you one of the few who can write on this subject without obscenity."
● Lionel Abrahams, editor Purple Renoster & Sesame

"The legend of poet extraordinaire Farouk Asvat: - like vintage wine, proper poetry matures with time, and like vintage art the voice and wisdom of a poet worth the name is timeless."
● Mphutlane wa Bofelo, kagablog

"you almost catch your breath at some of the stanzas - you can re-read it several times and be struck by new ideas, metaphors, elegiac surprises, and the heartfelt poignancy "
● Aggrey Klaaste, editor Sowetan

"Out of an angry silence, a polished poet is born."
● Anton Harber, editor Weekly Mail

● DE PELGRIM

Dutch translation by © Irene Scheltes

Ballingschap is een bedevaart ver
En het leven
Hoererend met de dood
Is een ogenblik ver

     Torens
     Met siroop bedekt bij zonsondergang
     Fonkelende verlokkingen
     Voor de neon nacht
     En bladeren van chocola
     Dansen in d'augustuswind
     In het mecca van torens

Waar de verloren pelgrim van het land
De armzalige tempel van zijn dromen vond
     Heiligdom van zijn nachtmerries

Ο ΠΡΟΣΚΥΝΗΤΗΣ

WE CAN GO TO SLEEP NOW

WE CAN GO TO SLEEP NOW
there is a darkness in here
© Farouk Asvat

We can go to sleep now.
There is a darkness in here.

There is nothing we can do
There is nothing we can say
Will change this house
Dancing with jubilation
Around the flaming walls
And collapsing roofs

We can go to sleep now.
There is a darkness in here.

There is nothing we can write
There is nothing we can say
Will change this house
Where children merrily burn along
To the rhythm of the revolution

We can go to sleep now.
There is a darkness in here.

There is nothing we can say
There is nothing we can do
Will change this land now
Where children chant in the streets:
The revolution is just 'round the corner
     The second coming is here

We can go to sleep now.
There is a darkness in here.

There is nothing we can say
There is nothing we can write
Will change this land now
Because that is how
They liberate the country
Because that is how
They ruin the country

We can go to sleep now.
There is a darkness in here.

WE PRAY TO OUR RESTLESS ANCESTORS

WE PRAY TO OUR RESTLESS ANCESTORS
© Farouk Asvat

We pray that our restless ancestors
Who left in such a burst of youthful hurry
In such a mutilated state of defiance
Will not go away

We sprinkle muti on their reed mats
We sprinkle holy water on the adobe floors
To keep them here with us
In the house of death,
These restless ancestors
Who do not want to go away
And who do not want to stay.
Hai!

So we beg our young ancestors
Who have come to visit us
That they will not leave us
To our own deaths

So we bring the salty sea to them
So we smoke them out with burning dung
So that they may leave us
To our own deaths

BUT NO!

BUT NO!
© Farouk Asvat

You would think
They would take fresh water from the spring
And blow holy prayers upon it.
But no!

You would think
They would sing to the white beasts
And lure them into the trap of the sirens.
But no!

You would think
Their wives would deny themselves drink
And bathe their children in prayer ponds.
But no!

You would think
They would flog themselves with thorny acacia
And sprinkle libations to their gods.
But no!

You would think
They would enter the minds of their enemies
And call upon the spirits of their ancestors.
But no!

You would think
Their men would indulge in fasting
And prepare themselves for their battle against tyranny.
But no!

You would think
Their entire beings would be focussed on justice
And the day they would thank their gods.
But no!

     But no!
They show their enemy the way
     To keep themselves in chains
     They fornicate and masturbate
     In the alleys
     They razzle and dazzle
     In the shebeens
     They toyi-toyi and gumba
     In the streets

          But no!
By the creatures of the natural world
And the spirits of the supernatural world
We will fight our fight again
We will sing our song again
