WE PRAY TO
OUR RESTLESS ANCESTORS
© Farouk Asvat
We pray
that our restless ancestors
Who left in
such a burst of youthful hurry
In such a
mutilated state of defiance
Will not go
away
We sprinkle
muti on their reed mats
We sprinkle
holy water on the adobe floors
To keep
them here with us
In the
house of death,
These
restless ancestors
Who do not
want to go away
And who do
not want to stay.
Hai!
So we beg
our young ancestors
Who have
come to visit us
That they
will not leave us
To our own
deaths
So we bring
the salty sea to them
So we smoke
them out with burning dung
So that
they may leave us
To our own
deaths
