There are rocks that weep
streaming down mountainsides
There are rocks that tremble
quivering in the centre of earthquakes
There are rocks that melt
exploding in the mouth of volcanoes
There are rocks that sing
Gurgling down rapids of delight
But there is nothing as hard as the human
heart.
There are no earthquakes of the heart
No volcanoes of the blood
No quaking of the ventricles
No quivering of the strings
The human heart is
Harder than granite
Heavier than mountains
Flimsier than gossamer
As precarious as the web
It has the stamp of ignorance
The spirit of barrenness
The seal of a coward
And the soul of a miser
