BIRDS: at the zoo lake

BIRDS: at the zoo lake
© Farouk Asvat

The blue cranes seem bewildered
Having flown in for a drink
From the rural wastelands

The white geese are arrogant
Having learnt their petulance
From the streetwise city kids

The Egyptian geese seem most at home here
Having stayed behind on their journey
From the Cairo to the Cape

The local lovebirds seem out of place here
Having made it a place of pilgrimage
From another dreary day in the townships

Mistaking it for a catwalk in Paris
(For this is the nearest thing
to the left bank of the Seine)
Or the colonial gardens of Barcelona

These young chicks circling the lake
     Like pilgrims circling the Kaaba
Strut like fashionable Arab girls in Regents Park:
          Red miniskirts and pink blusher
          Camouflaged under their black cloaks
