LAS' BUS

LAS' BUS
© Farouk Asvat

     (the 7 o' clock bus to Lenz)

Blue sky blue smoke and bluegums
In the evening haze
As the landscape passes
In fleeting window frames:
     Tired and languid.

Inside, in the overcrowded space
Dagga smoke and cigarette haze mix with the booze,
And Pakree here at the back shouts:

     • "Eh, Devlin, what you doing with that little girl?
         Your chando - sari wife waiting for you,
         give you big hiding."

• 'Heit, howzit?!'

          • "Ah smooth basin, one way."

     • 'Hey Bro', send the beer;
         we know you won by the horses again.'

• "Strues god ninyani kapella tickey-for-free;
    ai, but the bus is full, Jack."

               • 'The driver is blind;
                   he won't hear you.'

• "Prrrt.  Prrrt.
    Mr Dinath, can you come drive this bus for us?"

          • 'Sorry, the boss is enjoying biryani.'
