Our
love knew no fanfare
Nor
the exciting rhythms of romance
It
came quiet
Like
the dawn, gentle
Because you knew pain
You
could know pain
Love like the day
On
its unburdened course;
So
when night descends
Your
flames are soft and lingering:
Today you will love me
Wash away the acid in my chest
Caress my heart to a steady rhythm
Put my poetry to song
Tomorrow you will not care
If I writhe in gutters
Lisping drunken philosophies
Or write love-tinted poetry
On rainy afternoons
So I seek your lips
Find the woman inside
The marble-black virgin eyes,
Knowing you will leave
Another hint of sorrow in my laughter.
