Fired
by the fires of Athlone
That
fled the horrors of our Black September
Schooled
in a shadowy foreign dormitory
Returned
to sing
This land is my land
From the Limpopo to Robben Island
Eyes
that knew the pain of separation, of exile
Became
gentle with the strength of understanding
Calm
in firm resolve.
Young,
too young matured,
While
your mothers' tongues wag childish chatter
Your
big black white eyes
Remembered
in me the hell of my life
Asked
what pain do I know
Since
your eyes are so quiet.
You
blew seabreezes into my cobwebbed mind
Unveiled
the lies to self-survival
Opened
the wounds of my solitary struggles
Put
fresh bougainvillaea into my emptied life:
Cerise,
orange,
And
green grenades not to forget.
