Black is the orchestra.

The autumnal sounds of the viola
Sound strange:

The season has forgotten to disrobe,
Keeping her chocolate wrappers for another day.

'Winter does not stay long,' I muse,
As it caresses my brain with its icy breath.

     It is evening all afternoon
     And spring is slow in coming
     Like all the years of our lives:

THE LOVE THAT HAD FOUND THEM

Shower a confetti of pink carnations
Play the mournful shehnai
Light the joyful deepak
In the dancing hands of Shiva
Sprinkle them with coloured rice
Sprinkle them with holy water
Your beloved has come:
In a sari of rose petals and gold embroidery
With a dot of blood on her forehead.

Put sweet betel leaves in their mouths
Let the singer dance with a thousand rainbows
As they walk around the spluttering flames
As they tie the knot of eternity washed in flames
Circumambulating the eternal flames of love
Seven times
Sprinkled with Ganges water
Panditjee chanting through the choking smoke

At last,
They sleep beneath a curtain of carnations
Whispering seven times to the cool night
Celebrating the love that had found them
- Surrounded by the turmoil of the townships

There is a kind of death
In the land of my birth,
Offering me another cup of sadness:

            That is all there is.

        Yet,
        Often,
        I have thought of you:

            Sitting here
            In the midst of my sad war

    While you gather your forces
    Nurturing your newborn
    Under the bleak sun
    Of the 14th arrondisement
    Drinking tea with Claribel Alegria,
    The ghosts of death squads hovering around us

    Separated by continents of oppression
    We give sustenance
    To the memories stacked upon memories
    Of the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo
    Thinking of their dear departed
    The detained
    The dead
    And the disappeared,
    Our beloved desaparecidos
