AUTUMN ON A SUNDAY MORNING

AUTUMN ON A SUNDAY MORNING
© Farouk Asvat

Township music wafts up bluesily
To my fifth floor cube:
A house in a room.
A charcoal child swings
Listless and nonchalant
In the morning sun of winter.
Mother and boyfriend
(husband and wife so far away)
Fry chicken offal in the backyard
Of the gujerati school
Where children sing
The alphabet on weekdays.
Shaking the homebrew shake
Doing the slowmotion monkeyjive
Just taking it easy:
Building god's paradise is hard work
Even his servants need a rest

HERFST OP EEN ZONDAGECHTEND

Dutch translation by © Irene Scheltes

Mbaqanga zweeft neerslachtig omhoog
Naar mijn hok op de vijfde verdieping:
Een huis in een kamer.
Een kind als kolen schommelt
Lusteloos en nonchalant
In de winterochtendzon.
De moeder en haar vriend
(man en vrouw zo ver)

EVERY NIGHT

EVERY NIGHT
© Farouk Asvat

Every night
I make sure
The windows are closed
The doors locked

Every night
I make sure
Against these thugs
Of the night

Every night
I make sure
The burglarproofing is sturdy
The bolt and chain secure

Every night
I make sure
Against these prowlers
Of the night

Every night
I make sure
The double-catch is on
The safety-lock in its place

Every night
I make sure
Against these men lurking
In the night

Every night
I make sure
A flick-knife by my side
A knobkierie by the door

Every night
I make sure
One eye is open
On the verge
Of sleep and awake
On the verge
Of life and death

Every night
I make sure
I protect myself
Against the anger
Of The Spoilers

Every night
I make sure
I protect myself
Against the wrath
Of the Security Police

Every night
I make sure
I protect myself
Against the indignation
Of the New Guys on the block

EVERY DAY

EVERY DAY
© Farouk Asvat

Every day
a little more lager
Every day
a little more murder
Every day
a little more chance
Every day
a little more dance
Every day
a little more song
Every day
a little more wrong
Every day
a little more life
Every day
a little more death
Every day
is just another
ordinary
Every day

THE IMPERIAL GHETTO

THE IMPERIAL GHETTO
© Farouk Asvat

Muezzins cry
Into the humid grey maze of the city
Competing for clients,
Where shopkeepers blare Indian film hits
From Madressa Arcade:
Standing on the corner with me
A lonely man watches the world go by;
A hunchbacked midget ambles along
In a red shirt and yellow tie
Smiling the clever smile of the wise;
The naughty streetcorner kids
Take an eyeful of the nubile schoolgirl
Shyly hurrying home in her short uniform;
An unkempt fellow in dirty overalls
Says he loves the Indians
- of America -
An ironic glee in his eyes;
A dishevelled wench throws a casual kiss
Into the late afternoon air
To nobody in particular
Lazily walking along with her albino pimp,
Hiding a flick-knife under his lumberjacket
Heartily responding to the foul obscenities of logic
Gushing forth from the drunkard staggering by;
The smartly dressed troubadour singing
     Is this the life?
     Is this the ghetto
     We wish to preserve?
