ANIMALS IN THE WILD

ANIMALS IN THE WILD
© Farouk Asvat

Mandela didn't even give you a mangy dog.
He got the sturdy red elephant from Germany
And his comrades took the sleek lion of Africa,
While the old crocodile has gone to sleep
In the wilderness
Lying down with the tiger an' all,
And the wily de Klerk
Has kept the armoured hippos
And the mechanised elephants
And the fiery red falcons
Under the stewardship
Of his little poodles

And you and me, my sister,
We do what we always do:
Pick up the doggy dung

AND, INTO EXILE

AND, INTO EXILE
© Farouk Asvat

Gentle
You spoke in flames
With the rolling thunder
Of your taut cowhide drums

Hunted and hounded
You sought refuge
Among the reeds and acacias
Among the elephant grass and baobab
Of your native land

Hunted and hounded
You sought the fruits of the desert
In the foreign countries
Of your own continent

Hunted and hounded
You found refuge in the icy landscapes
Of an alien society
Where the sun hardly sets

GET ENGAGED

GET ENGAGED
© Farouk Asvat

Get engaged to Kalashnikov.
If you cannot do that
Write him a passionate poem.
If you cannot do that
Dream a fragrant letter
Scented with revolutionary love

WE SURVIVE

WE SURVIVE
© Farouk Asvat

We survive
In the mouth of hyenas
We survive
In the shadow of pines
We survive
Upon the rippling lagoon at night
We survive
Living on dreams
We survive
Fighting with our lives
We survive
Dancing into the barrel of a gun

ADVICE FOR A MOTHER ...

ADVICE FOR A MOTHER LOOKING FOR HER CHILD
AFTER A DAY OF UNREST
for the children of Palestine & Azania
© Farouk Asvat

Mamma,
If your child is not home
You will find her
At the police station

Mamma,
If he is not there
You will find her
At police headquarters

Mamma,
If she is not there
You will find him
At the local clinic

Mamma,
If he is not there
You will find her
At the hospital

Mamma,
If she is not there
You will find him
In exile

Mamma,
If he is not there
You will find her
At the mortuary

Mamma,
If she is not there
You will find him
In the cemetery

Mamma,
If he is not there
You will find
She is disappeared

Mamma,
If you cannot find them
You will find them
In a mass grave
