HEY DUDE!

HEY DUDE!
© Farouk Asvat

Hey Dude!
If you think you're tuned in
You're really tuned out
If you think you've got it made
You're pretty much out of touch

Hey Coolie!
If you think you're high and mighty
You're really low
If you're rich on wheeling and dealing
You're pretty poor on self-respect

Hey Bushie!
If you're supporting Charlie
Charlie isn't supporting you
If you think you're with the in-crowd
You're pretty much out in the cold

Hey Honky!
If you think you've got it all wrapped up
That you're strictly in control of the situation
You've got a lovely surprise coming
In the form of the Second Revolution

Hey Kaffir!
Malcolm told you about the field nigger
He told you about the house nigger
But he didn't tell you about the palace nigger
Sitting comfortably in the house of lords

WE: THE PEOPLE

WE: THE PEOPLE
© Farouk Asvat

     for Pablo Neruda

We: the people
        merge with the green jungle
We: the people
        sprout from the red earth
We: the people
        emerge from the black tar
We: the people
        steam like white bread

We: the people
        are the people
We: the people
        are the strength

We: the people
        carry the struggle
We: the people
        carry the struggle with dignity

We: the people
        struggle for freedom
We: the people
        struggle for food
We: the people
        struggle for life

THE TRUE GUERILLAS

THE TRUE GUERILLAS
© Farouk Asvat

The true guerillas stayed at home
They confronted each new day
as if it was a new lease on life
They confronted each new death
as if it was a new way of life
They confronted each new morning
as if it was a new invitation to death
They confronted each new night
as if it was a new way of death

The true freedom fighters stayed at home
They confronted each new day
as if they were attending their own wedding
as if they were witnessing their own birth
as if they were attending their own funeral
as if they were walking with their own angel of death

The true insurgents stayed at home
They went to bed each night
as if they were sleeping with a deadly lover
They went to sleep each night
as if they were in love with death

The true revolutionaries stayed at home
They confronted each new death
as if it was a new way of life

YOU CANNOT FEED THE POOR

YOU CANNOT FEED THE POOR
© Farouk Asvat

You can coat cupolas in gold
But you cannot feed the poor
You can build cathedrals in the desert
But you cannot feed the poor
You can fly men to the moon
But you cannot feed the poor
You can fly in consultants
But you cannot feed the poor
You can discuss the hungry
But you cannot feed the poor
