AN AUTUMN EVENING: state of emergency

AN AUTUMN EVENING:
     a state of emergency
© Farouk Asvat

An eerie silence pervades the air.
It is not night yet
(That will come later);
Ghostly sirens
Float upon the misty streets
Bathed in beaconblue lights
Below a freshly clipped moon
Where violins play

CITY CENTRE

CITY CENTRE
© Farouk Asvat

          The palisaded grey buildings
          Jigsaw
          Into the aluminium dawn

                                        The meter ticks
The sun comes                Time in my brain.
Sluggish,                         A solitary
And rather late,               Patch of greenery
Through a mist                Chirping
Of memories                    An eternal tune.

          Too soon,
          The cold night comes               Sometimes,
Flashing neon lights                    I never know
          Promising nothing                    How I negotiate
                                                       This maze
                                                       Of concrete

Jo'burg is in my bladder
Like Azania is a gut feeling
The smell's disgusting
But it's home

AUTUMN ON ANOTHER SUNDAY ...

AUTUMN ON ANOTHER SUNDAY MORNING
© Farouk Asvat

The sparkling shards of Saturday night
Glitter on the grey sidewalk:

Flowerchildren gather echoes
Of their musical nostalgia
On a portable radio

The hobo carries his life
In a brown paperbag
Of forgetfulness

The whore smiles,
Sober and sad as ever,
Decrepit even,

     Looking through
     Another empty bottle
     To another empty day
