SMOKE

SMOKE
© Farouk Asvat

            Smoke swirls up in nostalgia:
Fragile cinder collapsing in my palm
            As I light the first furtive cigarette;
            The faithful coalstove choking us
            In the sour haze of the old kitchen;
The watchman rubbing his hands together
            To keep the brazier warm;
The brilliant orange of a veldfire
Leaving a crunchy scrub of remorse:

Somehow there is an aura of sadness
            Within the smoke of childhood.

Now there is
The acrid smell of tyres burning
The singeing bubbles of flesh smouldering
The screaming rhythms of grotesque dancing
The bursting flowers of teargas blossoming
The swirling gloom of smoke rising
            from blazing shanties
The spectral haze of mothers hurrying
            through the smoggy dusk
The lightning flashes of zealous comrades burning
            witches in adobe huts

That is now the clear smoke of growing up

STONES

STONES
© Farouk Asvat

                          Fawn pebbles
                               shimmer
                          beneath
                      rippling streams

       A grey stone
                          gallops
                                    upon
                                           the muddy
                                                          Schoonspruit

These are fond memories of youth.

Now
Stones clank
Against armoured army trucks
Rocks dent
Soft-skinned police vans

Now these are the weapons
We exchange
For a bullet
Through the head

IT IS NIGHT IT IS QUIET

IT IS NIGHT
IT IS QUIET
© Farouk Asvat

The tiger no longer dances in your eyes

     It is night
     It is quiet

          Somewhere

          Hidden
          Within the jungle
          Of your emotions
          The panther
          Turns in its sleep

YOUR BREASTS

YOUR BREASTS
© Farouk Asvat

Your breasts are like cannons
Falling into my chest

     Then again
Your breasts are like shining cupolas
Stolen from a mosque in Uzbekistan:
          soft rippling gold
          shimmering in the sun

DON'T GIVE YOUR LOVE AWAY

DON'T GIVE YOUR LOVE AWAY
© Farouk Asvat

Don't give your love away
Don't sing your song away
Don't dance your dance away
Don't dream your dreams away
I said
Giving my dreams away

Keep some
I said
While you build others with others

Keep some
I said
While others take others away from you
