THE SAP

THE SAP
© Farouk Asvat

o my mother's child
drink of the Sap

the Sap is all!
that is left to us

Blond
and Bloody as a bayonet
       Charred as bullets
                                   sizzling
                                              through
                                                         our
                                                             bodies

o children drink
to our Lives
for it is our Deaths too

BEATING BONGOS

BEATING BONGOS
© Farouk Asvat

Beating bongos
Bringing tidings
Of a shot son

Fluent flute
Moaning mother
Pleading with pitiless gods her pitiful state

Gentle guitar
Weeping father
Soothing in restrained anger

Vibrant vibes
Laughing children
Playing sadly in the sand

Lamenting flute rises defiant
Beats my heart to the beat of the bongo
Beating to battle

THE KNOCK

THE KNOCK
© Farouk Asvat

I am left with a sigh that kneels to heaven
A tongue that rebukes a mind that wandered
A heart that bangs against the ribs that cage me
A stomach void as the chasms of space

I leash my mind for a walk
But like a restive dog
Pegged by a pole
Each movement at a tangent
Returns me to the confines of the same circle
Treading a thousand times trodden territory
Till it has thought everything
Yet has thought only whereupon it traverses

THE POET

THE POET
© Farouk Asvat

prisoner of the cubicle
thoughts spiral up in smoke
kiss the ceiling
dissolve into nothingness

slowly
painfully
an image develops
a painting of ashes, roses
love and loneliness
