FORGOTTEN

FORGOTTEN
© Farouk Asvat

The streets are full of strangers
Old friends pass on
Quickly saying hello
New ones
They stay their distance

Now this cursed loneliness is upon me

On platforms
There isn't even a silent moment
In publications
Not even a blank space
In memory of these words

Now this cursed loneliness is upon me

I have only
Blank paper to talk to
To be filed away
To gather cobwebs
Like a sane person
In an insane institution

BEYOND CYNICISM

BEYOND CYNICISM
© Farouk Asvat

With laughter beyond cynicism
I find
That love is a refuge from loneliness
That life does not owe us a living
That god is a clown to smile away the tears
That every meeting is an invite to a parting
That we live to die.

Yet like fools we have enough wisdom
Not to switch off the suffering.

THE SILENCED YEARS

THE SILENCED YEARS
© Farouk Asvat

Between the moments sprinkled with sparkling laughter
I watch my life go by on streetcorners
Speak the sorrowful strains of a sitar
Sing a new anthem upon ancestral drums
Dance, guerilla-fashion, the dance of the warrior
Knowing the cops are out
Children-hunting

TO YOU

TO YOU
© Farouk Asvat

You can prey on my loneliness
Fill your ego to bursting
Wave the banner of my hardiness
Or condemn me to wizardry.
You have extracted enough tears.

For I am now of that breed
That feeds on bitterness
Speaks with venom
Of lost souls and forgotten men
Counting days
In cemeteries of the living
