DO NOT ASK FOREVER, LOVE

DO NOT ASK FOREVER, LOVE
© Farouk Asvat

Bombs falling in the evening
Rape screaming in the night
Bodies falling in the morning
Hunger creeping in the day
Fear arriving in the youngster
Fragrant paper waiting in the drawer
Queen-of-the-night wilting in the vase
Cold bullets waiting in my hand
Is all I have, my love

MOSAIC

MOSAIC
© Farouk Asvat

Here, in the city of towers
In the land of midnight statements
Among the bluegums and minedumps
Here, it is the silence of the jungle.

I lean against cold marble pillars
In the foyer of the magistrates' court
While Vuyi waits for the verdict
            His solitary confinement mind
            Not taking in the jargon.

Here in the peninsula of the Khoi
Again, the seasons are out of touch:
Our lives are yesterday-today-tomorrows
That bloom in the spring that comes before winter.

           NhuNhu, unknown and unmourned,
            Took his life
Tied it up in a shoestring
            Hung it from the prisonrail.

Our lives are not our own
Here in the land of the mielie farmer
For cattle are easily bound and slaughtered
Laughter and tears go unnoticed.

            I was not born with a switchblade in my hand;
I had to learn the rhythm of the streets:
Western is too fast with its guns,
The whiteman too calculated with his dealings.

Apartheid has done its work.

Soweto, shrouded in smoke,
Raises its Black fists against the sky;
And I, somewhere inbetween,
Raise mine here in the city:
Half-defiant, half-angry.

            We live in interesting times.
And in the nature of this curse
            We gallivant with death
We make ancestors of young men
We make heroes of dead men

Zanempilo, the bringer of health,
Is also the bringer of death.
Malusi's rolling laughter
And Biko's spirit lives here.

THE DARK SEA

THE DARK SEA
© Farouk Asvat

In the lounge
A deepak flutters
And incense burns
To the strange gods
Of my youth

In the backyard
Grey smoke, grey rain,
And orange flames
Devour nostalgia
In a bonfire of sentiments

The wind is wet.
In the melancholy of the shadows
The moist timber glistens
In the dark

In the first light of night
I lie down
Waiting for the first touch,
Anticipating:
A solitary star,
A world of whirling clouds

     The sea is dark
And your eyes are darker still,
     Hiding everything.

          Looking over your shoulder,
          The sea glistens with moonlight
          Sand stings in the wind;
          Holding you,
          A world of whirling clouds,
          I remember worlds gone by,
          Loneliness and loves ended,
          A blossom of jacaranda
          Falling quietly in the breast.

[] DE DONKERE ZEE

Dutch translation by © Irene Scheltes

Op het erf
Grijze rook, grijze regen,
En oranje vlammen
Nostalgie verterend
In een vreugdevuur van gevoelens

In de salon
Fladdert een deepak
En wierook brandt
Voor vreemde goden
Van mijn vriend

De wind is vochtig
In de melancholie der schaduwen
Glans t het natte hout

En ik lig
In het eerste licht van de nacht
Voor de eerste aanraking,
Vooruitziend,
Een eenzame ster
Een wereld van woelende wolken:

     De zee is donker
     En je ogen donkerder
     Alles verbergend

Als ik over je heen kijk
Glinstert de zee in het maanlicht,
          Zand striemt door de wind.
          Nu ik je vasthoud,
          Een wereld van werv'lende wolken,
Ik herinner mij hoe werelden vergingen
          Eenzaamheid en vervlogen liefdes
En een bloesem van de jaracanda
Valt zacht jes in in mijn borst.

OUR SEASON OF ANOMY

OUR SEASON OF ANOMY
                                          after Wole Soyinka
© Farouk Asvat

When the rains came
The fires were burning inside us.
This was no downpour,
The blessing of our lives.
This was white-hot, searing.
And what shield was this?
Our puny Black fists;
Or the hardened earth
That once gave us sustenance,
Ripe only to receive
Our young bodies
