                                          after Wole Soyinka
© Farouk Asvat

When the rains came
The fires were burning inside us.
This was no downpour,
The blessing of our lives.
This was white-hot, searing.
And what shield was this?
Our puny Black fists;
Or the hardened earth
That once gave us sustenance,
Ripe only to receive
Our young bodies
