CRIES AND WHISPERS

CRIES AND WHISPERS
© Farouk Asvat

Our leaders are forgotten men
Living in damp dungeons
Or darkened rooms from six to six;
Their disciples are dead men
And the dead point their fingers at dying men

Blind to the prophets of their time
Priests chant of quranic freedom fighters
While the people stir from their anaesthesia
Theorists sink in the quagmire of their deadened minds
And minked ladies scent men to nights in clammy beds
While tattered beggars lie in drunken streets
Penicillin peddlers make money of misery
And dancing monkey-marionettes voice splendid phrases
While starvation feeds on the hungry bellies of our wastelands
